"I first read about scanmyphotos.com in a glowing article in The New York Times. It took me a while but I finally used this service and I could not have been more pleased with the results. I sent my photos by priority mail on a Wednesday, they received the package Friday and I got an e-mail that same Friday that my scanned photos were on their way back to me. I received the photos and the DVD on Monday. It could not have been any faster and the results could not have been better.
I sent the photos from the first two years of my daughters' lives when we were still using a regular film camera. The scans were excellent quality, crisp and clean, and we are so happy to now have all of our kids' pictures digitally saved. I have already pulled down my old photo albums from college and I am eagerly readying another order to be sent to be scanned by ScanMyPhotos.com.
Thanks,

How to Tag, Share and Easily Identify Your Scanned Photos
Picasa is free photo editing software from Google that makes your pictures look great. Sharing your best photos with friends and family is as easy as pressing a button! Click here for more info.
Excerpt:
"As you've probably discovered after years of taking digital snapshots, keeping a photo library organized can be a nightmare. Far and away your best ally: tags, which are little descriptors attached to each photo. Unfortunately, it's a major hassle to manually assign tags, which is why I was delighted to see the new automatic-tagging feature in the just-released Google Picasa 3.5."

Companies keep employees motivated in tough times (via OC Reg)
Mitch Goldstone and Carl Berman, co-owners of Irvine-based ScanMyPhotos.com, continually look for unusual ways to thank employees. During the summer they took the entire staff by limousine to a surprise dinner at the Montage Hotel in Laguna Beach. Soon they will close the business for three days and take the staff for a luxury visit to Las Vegas. They'll stay in a luxury suite and go to top shows.
ScanMyPhotos.com is a Web-based service that converts pictures to digital format.
"It's important to come up with special ways to let employees know that they are our most valued asset," Goldstone says. "Employees are family to us. They are so highly motivated to do great work. There's no way we could do this business. I can't afford not to reward them."
The result of such staff recognition is that the company has no
turnover and sales have continued to climb despite the recession, he

Tips to Help Organize for the Family Trip
Particularly in today’s difficult economy, having needed supplies, including cameras, batteries and snacks on hand can save time, money and frustration, according to the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO).
“Being organized for travel is the first and perhaps most important step in planning a trip,” NAPO President Laura Leist said. “Planning ahead and determining what is essential for your trip is just as important as packing the right items and knowing where they are when you arrive at your destination.”
NAPO would like to offer a few tips to help individuals and families get and stay organized during summer vacations.
To save time
• Keep a copy of your packing list on the computer to cut down on time spent recreating it for future trips. Update it before each trip to include new information such as medications.
• Create an itinerary before you travel which lists travel times, hotel check-in/check-out times and a list of activities/places you’d like to visit.
• Map out your route ahead of time if driving
• Keep all documents related to your trip (airline tickets, car rental and hotel reservations, etc.) in a “Travel/Trips” active file for easy retrieval.
• Keep a toiletry bag packed with travel-sized containers year-round. This way, you’re always ready for a long trip or an overnight stay.
• Place items you’ll need immediately at the top of your suitcase, or in a separate
handbag.
To save money
• Think ahead and pack items you may need for various vacation activities, including band-aids for hiking, beach towels and/or umbrellas for the beach and aloe vera for sunburns.
• Make sure you have camera batteries, film and other necessities before leaving home as these items will cost much more at tourist locales.
• Make sure camera and power charger cables are included on your packing list. It would be terrible to waste vacation time and money looking for cords needed to recharge your equipment.
• Review vacation planning guides for your destination to find valuable coupons on dining, entertainment and activities on your itinerary.
To save stress
• Look up the weather in your vacation destination to make sure you pack the appropriate clothing and shoes.
• Begin packing early and only pack what you absolutely need.
• Be sure to leave extra space in your suitcase if you plan on buying souvenirs.
• Organize your wardrobe around one basic color to prevent over-packing. You’ll be able to mix and match easily.
• Check items off your to-do list at least one to two weeks before you travel so you are not pressed for time at the last minute.
• Use suitcase organizers to separate outfits or types of clothing.
• Get your car fully serviced at least two weeks prior to travel so you have time to make any necessary repairs.
• Leave your itinerary and contact information with family or friends should an emergency arise.

Digital Tips Today author, Nancy Hevenor Blogs on Photo Scanning
Reposted from Nancy Hevenor's Digital Tips Today blog:If you are over 30 you probably have a lot of non-digital photos. And for most people they are still in the envelopes and stuffed in a box or drawer where they are not only accumulating dust they are slowly fading away. Now that even most grandmothers have a digital camera and perhaps a digital photo frame it would be nice to have some of those old photos to look at and and preserve. And the only hope that your children and grandchildren will keep them may be to get them scanned to a digital format to share with them.
I immediately set to work gathering up my old photos and putting them on some kind of order, eliminating duplicated and disasters.
Even just this task took me the better part of a week to prepare about 2,000 photos for scanning. I also ordered the photo index book which printed a thumbnail of every one of my photos.Friday, September 18, 2009
Poll: Top 10 Reasons Why People Scan Pictures

Why people digitize their analog photos is not always a pretty picture. According to a revised study released today by ScanMyPhotos.com, lamentable events in people's lives top the list of ten leading reasons why people are choosing to have high-speed commercial scans made from their shoeboxes of pictures.
But, collectively, pleasurable family occasions are also an important reason for preserving photographs.
" After and earlier poll of customers, we just asked again, and the results have maintained and mirror those prior ranking. The poll was motivated by wondering why people digitally archive their generations of family pictures that were previously stored in shoeboxes," explained Mitch Goldstone, president and CEO ScanMyPhotos.com.
According to ScanMyPhotos.com, topping the list of ten primary reasons why people want to scan pictures was divorce. "It turns out that the most common reason for scanning pictures is due to divorce and seeking to easily split up photos," explained Goldstone,. His company, ScanMyPhotos.com instantly marry pictures to a digital CD before a divorce takes it away. And, according to Goldstone, "the only thing easy and inexpensive about divorce is deciding who gets the photos; for just $64.00, his company commercially scans up to 1,000 pictures in minutes or buy a prepaid box that holds about 2,000standard pictures for $149.95 [buy two get third free]."
Divorce, followed by funerals and anxieties over fading photos topped the list, according Goldstone, who is a well-known photo imaging industry leader and regular speaker at major photo industry conventions, including PMA, Lyra Research, CES and InfoTrends.
This time, four hundred and twenty people were interviewed earlier thsi year for this revised study which identified the top ten reasons people scan pictures.
- 1) Divorce (22%
- 2) Funeral / Memorial Service (15%)
- 3) Concern About Losing or Fading Pictures (12%)
- 4) Anniversary Gift / Multi-media Presentation (11%)
- 5) Reunion (9%)
- 6) Birthday, Wedding Gift / Multi-media Presentation (9%)
- 7) Convenience (7%)
- 8) Genealogy / Sharing / Family History Project (6%)
- 9) Preservation from Natural Disaster (5%)
- 10) Other (4%)
[Methodology. According to 420 consumers who were polled by ScanMyPhotos.com during Jan 5-18, the top reason why they chose to have their entire shoeboxes of pictures commercially scanned was impending divorce].

"Photo Scanning Web Services Save Time, But How Much?" (via Wired Magazine)
Excerpt:
ScanMyPhotos.com also offers a similar service and scans hundreds of pictures per minute through an unnamed Kodak machine seen in this video.... Its rate of 5 cents per photo is likely the cheapest out of any similar service on the Internet.
