My Success Story

In 1990 Mitch Goldstone, president and CEO of Irvine, Calif.-based and 30 Minute Photos Etc., began purchasing the largest-sized display ads for their photo finishing category with several of the larger phone companies’ Yellow Pages services.

In August 2007, Goldstone noticed his usual ad which had run for 17 years, was not in one of the newly published directories. He alerted the company to the mistake and months later he received a letter of apology; but since Goldstone had signed a contract that absolved the company of publishing errors, he had no recourse for action.

This error created other problems for him: “Not only was I going to have to wait until next August to see my ad since the directory was already published, but without it, I looked like I was out of business. This is detrimental not only to potential customers, but to the industry and my competitors.”

In October 2007, Goldstone decided to look into online local search advertising. He had been hearing about how local search providers can geographically target a business’s message to local customers conducting online searches. Local search providers use keywords and search phrases to attract local customers to a company’s website by delivering results that are relevant to the company’s geographic region. They also provide free or paid listings that can be quickly updated unlike traditional Yellow Pages directories which are updated annually.

“My business continues to grow and change and we are always adding new products and specials,” said Goldstone. “Having the ability to quickly update my information when it changes, and reach customers in my area with my message, got me very excited about trying local search.” According to global Internet information provider, comScore, Inc., 47 percent of local searchers visited a local merchant as a result of their online search.

“Having the ability to quickly update my information when it changes, and reach customers in my area with my message, got me very excited about trying local search.”

“Within just a couple of weeks after placing my ad with, the phone started ringing and hasn’t stopped since. I’m getting at least 10 calls per day from customers who have found me on I can’t believe how easy it was to get started!”

In early November, Goldstone placed his first ad on “Within just a couple of weeks after placing my ad with, the phone started ringing and hasn’t stopped since. I’m getting at least 10 calls per day from customers who have found me on I can’t believe how easy it was to get started!”

Goldstone is utilizing’s Local Promote™ advertising program for his advertising needs. Local Promote provides an easy and cost effective way for businesses to guarantee that their listing will appear at the top of the search results page in a specified category and region. The annual subscription service allows businesses to reach targeted consumers already searching for their products and services online.

“Local Promote offers businesses an affordable, alternative advertising solution that guarantees their listing will appear at the top of search results.”

“Local Promote offers businesses an affordable, alternative advertising solution that guarantees their listing will appear at the top of search results,” said Jennifer Black, vice president of marketing. “Local Promote businesses are screened to confirm that they are in good standing with the Better Business Bureau to ensure an exceptional experience for users. Local Promote is also considerably less expensive than competitive ad programs and offers great value for businesses wishing to target local consumers.”

For 17 years Goldstone placed ads in traditional Yellow Pages directories, but never got the response or the results he is getting with his local search ads. “I should have been doing this years’ ago. When I look back now, I realize that I just advertised in the Yellow Pages’ directories more out of habit and not results. I was just like any other small business out there looking for a way to get my business noticed and didn’t know of another way.”

Goldstone continues to track his local customer leads, which are growing as a result of his relationship with “Not only is connecting my business with new customers, they’re helping me build my business. The return on investment is incredible. I’m getting the exposure I never received with my traditional Yellow Pages ad and it’s costing me half the money.”

For over 17 years, Goldstone’s two businesses, and 30 Minute Photos have attracted nationwide customers. But he says attracting local customers requires a different strategy. “To survive as a small business, you need to reach local customers in your neighborhood. And to do this, you need a geographically focused strategy. helped me develop my strategy by reaching out to potential customers using local search. I’m really excited about the future and feel at peace knowing that will be right along side me as I grow my business into the future.”

Tales from the Great Free Gas Giveaway at

Click here to read more about the great free gas giveaway for walk-in photo scanning customers at

We ran out of free Chevron gift cards twice already and are restocking with more $5.00 - $25.00 cards. Part of the reason was extraordinary word-of-mouth raves and also the media attention we garnered from The Los Angeles Times and a national Associated Press feature.

For those non-regular readers of Tales from the World of Photo Scanning, or if you aren't regularly receiving our email updates [click here to sign up], then you can only imagine their expressions. Upon picking up their photo scan orders, we place a free Chevron gas card on top of their order to express our appreciation for driving to our Irvine, CA retail headquarters.

Even though and its parent company, 30 Minute Photos Etc. has regularly provided all types of extra treats, gifts and extras, this is the first time we instantly received unanimous smiles. Everyone loves the Chevron cards and are telling our story to their friends.

Just on Saturday, two of the more memorable orders were from a male customer in a very large SUV. We felt so sorry for him, that our staff handed over two cards; we can only hope each was valued at $25.00. Another customer drove up in a beautiful Ferrari (then again, have you ever seen one that wasn't?). Again, we lamented her predicament, as gas prices are so extreme that perhaps she couldn't afford it either; she received a $25.00 Chevron gift card.

And the stories continue.

If you would like to order Chevron gift cards for your business to provide to your customers to get them shopping, click on this direct ordering link at Chevron.

Kodak Channel Partners Gather To Share Best Practices And Strategies For Successfully Meeting Customers' Needs

Kodak's document imaging channel partners recently met in Las Vegas to learn about new products, solutions, technologies and best practices to help them meet customers' document capture and management needs.

Themed "Community of Excellence," the KODAK Executive Summit also supported the resellers of Kodak's Document Imaging products by focusing on the development of management strategies that help them grow their businesses.
Product demonstrations, a software showcase and an awards dinner rounded out the four day session. Attendees included KODAK Authorized Imaging Resellers, Desktop Scanner Resellers, Value Added Distributors, Independent Software Vendors, and Latin American Distributors.

A series of Kodak executives presented keynote addresses covering a range of business and marketing topics. Speakers included Phil Faraci, President and COO of Eastman Kodak Company; Jeffrey Hayzlett, Chief Business Development Office and Vice President of Eastman Kodak Company; Dolores Kruchten, General Manager, Document Imaging, and Vice President of Eastman Kodak Company, and Don McMahan, Vice President Sales and Regional Business Manager, United States & Canada Region, Document Imaging, Kodak's Graphic Communications Group (GCG).

"This year's summit was an opportunity to review Kodak's plans for continued industry leadership and growth through commitment, investment and by providing innovative document management products and solutions," said Kruchten. "We also discussed business development strategies within the document imaging industry as market trends forecast potential for additional growth."

Kruchten's presentation, entitled "The Future of Document Imaging," provided an overview of Kodak's future view of the industry and market, demonstrating Kodak's leadership in vision and determination to lead the future shape of the industry. Among other key points, the address discussed how capture software plays an increasingly important role in the process of managing documents and information and set the stage for acknowledging 20 industry awards received by Kodak's Document Imaging business as well as the seven new products launched in 2007—the most on both counts in the 80 year history of the business.

"This year's summit was a new format of bringing together the decision makers from our growing channel, including our traditional Authorized Imaging Resellers as well as our newly formed Desktop Scanner Reseller channel. The results were phenomenal, and the chemistry was great as we had much to celebrate, including creative applications and solutions, top sales performers, and outstanding service providers," said McMahan. "The summit provided an opportunity for our channel partners to gather in one spot to exchange best practices in sales and marketing strategies from across the country.

"Members of the $1 Million Club, BPO Management Services and Datamation Imaging Services also earned 2008 Service Awards and Product/Media Awards. New Wave Technologies took home both the Service Award and the Product/Media Award," added McMahan. "And Image Access Corporation joined the $1 Million Club Winners along with receiving a 2008 Service Award."

Our 18-year track record and all the endearing word-of-mouth support affords our team with high-spirited confidence that our reinvention of the photo imaging business is working.

We too switched from a pure product-based (film photo retailing) business into a nationwide photo imaging service leader. H-P, along with Kodak, IBM and other industry leaders understand that today’s smart money is on building a service business - rather than just peddling products.

For, our service is making people smile by preserving your photo memories, scanning and building photo albums, printing pictures, fixing your damaged photos with extraordinary restoration services and more [see link]. And, we do it fast, super-fast; all orders are scanned and mailed back the same day it is received.
Our magic means that there are not two-month delays in completing your orders, shipping pictures to India, or scanning on equipment that consumers can buy at Radio Shack. Often, they are bold enough to ask for advice and seek free help on how to copy our game plan. They study our website, but as soon as it is live, we are already onto the next project.

While we vigorously defend our proprietary business interests, it is encouraging that so many other entrepreneurs are opening up shop to scan pictures. It is a very large market - there are 3.5 trillion analog snapshots that need to be digitized.

Just as there is Google, YouTube and Starbucks, we remain encouraged by the strength of our brand and the steady addition of national recognition bestowed on our leadership in the photo imaging industry.

As our entire economy shifts toward a service-oriented structure, has successfully combined our traditional photo imaging business with today’s ultramodern ecommerce photo enterprise.

Sydney Morning Herald Decries "Aim, Shoot and Forget"

The Sydney Morning Herald in Australia illustrated the ongoing challenge of digital photography. Yes, consumers are shooting more pictures, but that now raises this issue of finding, organizing, and storing those images. And, according to writer Nikki Macdonald, these are activities consumers are forgoing.

"With almost two-thirds of all households now estimated to own a digital camera, today's youngsters face being deluged with an overwhelming number of childhood memories. Every smile, every milestone, every bad hair day faithfully recorded.

"But there's a much worse possibility.

"Ever discovered a stash of mildewed 5-inch floppy disks and realised the computer you used to record them has long since been binned and there's no way to get access to the information? Or pulled out an old video to find the image crackles and blurs across the screen?" asks the article.
Despite thousands of photos, Australian consumers have few prints of their photos and are placing these memories at risk by relying on either dubious back-up strategies or on mobile devices that can be easily lost.

"A recent Australian survey suggested that only 16 percent of digital snappers print their photos and more than three-quarters believe digital files are at least as safe as prints," says the article. "If these digital family archives are not constantly updated, there's a real risk that large amounts of our social history will be lost."

"It's not enough just to store photographs and keep back-ups," warns Internet consultant Paul Reynolds, of McGovern Online, in the article. "You have to keep it up to speed. The idea that you can keep the CD-ROM and forget about it for 50 years -- it will not be there."

Review of Photo Scanning Service:

Customer Comment on

Please include my feedback on your great service in your testimonials.

Here is a fantastic opportunity to digitally preserve your photo memories before they fade away. is currently providing a free DVD scan of 1000 4X6 photo prints to members of several social networking sites. You only pay for shipping. I just got my DVD and can say without reservation that I'm thrilled with the outcome. The photos are very sharp even when enlarged full screen. The average size of each JPEG is 1.47 MB. I carefully packed 999 prints (yea I know, I don't know how to count up to 1000) on a Friday and they were returned along with a DVD one week later.

Total cost: $16 for shipping the box of prints with USPS Ground from NJ to CA and $19.95 credit card payment to for return S&H by USPS priority mail. The quality of the scans greatly exceeded my expectations and the super-fast speed of processing is remarkable. The DVD is rated Archival Preservation Quality. Adding a date to the photos and organizing them afterwards is a breeze with a software such as Adobe Photoshop Elements and very rewarding.

Apparently the company is no longer including a Nestle's Crunch bar in the package, it sure would have added to my enjoyment. [see posting about newest random addition to orders]. I saw this promotion by in Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter.

The company has recently extended the offer until June 30, 2008. I highly recommend this fantastic service. This review is also posted on my Facebook page.

Thank you, Kormákur

Are Social Networking Sites Killing Yearbooks?

More changes underway for how we share and use pictures.

National Public Radio (NPR) reported about the possible demise of the yearbook in its Digital Culture segment in "Talk of the Nation" on May 6. The full segment is available to listen to online.
The hardcover yearbook used to be an indispensable part of the high school and college experience, says NPR, but today online social networking sites like
Facebook and MySpace allow students to memorialize their friendships online for free. As students become more reluctant to pay for a hardcover book, will social-networking sites bring about the yearbook's demise? Purdue University's yearbook, The Debris, has been published at the Indiana school since 1889. Editor-in-chief Kari Whisler talks to NPR about the final edition of The Debris, which will be published for the last time this summer.
