HUGE RAVE!

I finally did it. I dismantled all of my photo frames and old photo albums (which killed me!) and collected all of my photos. Nervously, I packed every single photograph I could find into three boxes. Everything from wallet-sized to 8x10s, they were shipped to Irvine, California, so the fine folks at
Scan My Photos could shoot them all through their high-powered scanner.Less than one week later, the wonderful postman dropped three boxes on our doorstep, full of all of my photos plus three DVDs contained over 5100 scanned images! Yes, I had over 5000 photos!

Now it's time for the really hard work. I have copied every image to my external hard drive, and I am cleaning up each photo and categorizing them. I'm also adding in all of my digital photo files. I will then burn images to CD or DVD and give them to family and friends. For Christmas, I gave family members an empty jewel case with a poem inside telling them what would be coming . . . eventually!I

hope everyone enjoys the photos as much as I am. I'm absolutely thrilled with the work done by Scan My Photos, and I am enjoying seeing all of these photographs from the past. Best of all, I know my photos are safe now. That's truly the best part.

Here is a fantastic opportunity to digitally preserve your photo memories before they fade away. ScanMyPhotos.com is currently providing a free DVD scan of 1000 4X6 photo prints to members of several social networking sites. You only pay for shipping. I just got my DVD and can say without reservation that I'm thrilled with the outcome. The photos are very sharp even when enlarged full screen. The average size of each JPEG is 1.47 MB. I carefully packed 999 prints (yea I know, I don't know how to count up to 1000) on a Friday and they were returned along with a DVD one week later. Total cost: $16 for shipping the box of prints with USPS Ground from NJ to CA and $19.95 credit card payment to ScanMyPhotos.com for return S&H by USPS priority mail. The quality of the scans greatly exceeded my expectations and the super-fast speed of processing is remarkable. The DVD is rated Archival Preservation Quality. Adding a date to the photos and organizing them afterwards is a breeze with a software such as Adobe Photoshop Elements and very rewarding. Apparently the company is no longer including a NestlĂ©’s Crunch bar in the package, it sure would have added to my enjoyment. I saw this promotion by ScanMyPhotos.com in

Below is my review, which I also gave orally at my geneallgy class today: Family Tree magazine had recently sent out an e-mail about a promotion by ScanMyPhotos.com by which one could send in up to 1,000 4x6 prints for scanning just for the $20 cost of return shipping. I got this note only a few days before the Feb 29 deadline, however, and my wife and I didn't have time to plunge into our huge stash of prints to put together a box of photos we'd like scanned. But I did have four rolls of prints from my family-history trip through Alabama a few years ago that I did want to use on a genealogy website. And since it would be at least 6 months (i.e. post-remodling) before we're likely to get a home scanner, I decided to package them up and try it. I still had the negatives, so there was little to lose even if it was a diaster and the high-speed scanner chewed up my photos. I mailed the photos Thursday afternoon, got an e-mail Saturday night from the Irvine, Calif., company that my order had been processed, and on my porch this afternoon (Monday) were my prints. I couldn't be happier with the results. All the 93 prints were in fine shape, and the scans on the disk were as sharp as the photos and about 1.5-2 MBytes each, not a 30kb thumbnail that I feared they might be. Absolutely fabulous. They even posted them on they're own Flickr-like site ... to make it easy to buy prints, cards and other projects, to be sure, but also easier for others to see, too. On top of that, there was a large Nestle's Crunch bar (unbroken) in the package, too. (Perhaps that is a cheap, but delightful, damage detector?) In short, I could not be happier with the ScanMyPhotos service. Normally, the 1,000-print scan costs something like $100 dollars -- and for that they do handle a variety of photo sizes. (But they do have very specific packaging and photo-ordering instructions on their website that must be followed for you to get the exepcted scans.) Two thumbs up ... WAY up for ScanMyPhotos.com and that Family Tree Magazine promotion.

I first learned about [ScanMyPhotos.com] from Popular Photography & Imaging Magazine, August, 2006 issue. My dilemma was that I had 7000 photos prints scattered in multiple albums. This collection spanned some 20 years. The thought of scanning all these to my computer was not at all palatable. After reading this article, I said to my wife this is too good to be true for the price quoted. I called and spoke to Mr. Mitch Goldstone at 30 Minute Photo. I liked what he had to say. I then purchased seven photo boxes, and chronologically sorted these in quantities of 1000 per box. I ultimately sent three orders to 30 Minute Photo e.g.; 3000, 2000, 2000. For each order I enclosed written instructions e.g. Box #1,scan front of box to rear of box, etc. As soon as 30 Minute Photo received my order, I received an e mail stating that my order had been received. About two hours later, I received another e mail stating that my order of 3000 photos had been scanned and they were on there way back to me. What I received was my photos that were sent back in the same box, and same chronological order that I sent. In addition to this, I received CD’s with 500 Jpeg files per disc. I have subsequently uploaded these to my computer, and have renamed files, and make backup copies. I have viewed these on my computer, and television as a slide show. The quality of the scan is excellent. Mitch states that they are scanned at least 300dpi. I am impressed with the quality of the scan, as well as the service provided by 30 Minute Photo. I would highly recommend this service that was provided. My wife has a plethora of photos that at some point in time will be scanned.

How to Participate in National Photo Preservation Month

Did you know there are more than 3.5 trillion analog photographic pictures - representing generations of families’ historical "Kodak moments" that have not been seen in years and are clamoring to be digitized?

Created by ScanMyPhotos.com® to help call attention to and preserve all those shoeboxes of treasured photo snapshots, the National Photo Preservation Month [NPPM] begins on January 1, 2009. Its goal is to draw awareness to and showcase the obligation of protecting those special photo memories before they fade away.

The month of January was selected to coincide with the
International Consumer Electronics Show® in Las Vegas. This is the world’s largest consumer trade show, where new consumer products are introduced and often the seed for innovations that surround digital imaging.

"Using
Kodak digital imaging technology, it is possible to affordably and quickly digitize all those snapshots," explained Mitch Goldstone, founder of NPPM and president and CEO of ScanMyPhotos.com, an international ecommerce photo imaging service that was founded in 1990 by its parent company, 30 Minute Photos Etc, based in Irvine, California.

Goldstone said "the demand to digitize pictures is mandated by the span of time which leads many older photos to fade away or become misplaced. Why was the National Photo Preservation Month created?

The idea was sparked from
National Geographic Traveler magazine’s® Jan/Feb 2009 front cover headline, "Preserving Your Travel Photos" which featured a lengthy article by Scott S. Stuckey on how to make your travel photos truly timeless. Traveler’s senior photo editor, Daniel Westergren explained that "the short answer is to scan your old pictures." This advice guided ScanMyPhotos.com to help promote making all your photo memories timeless through the establishment of NPPM to draw attention to preserving photos.

How to get involved with National Photo Preservation Month

  1. Collect all your old photos. Get your entire family and circle of friends involved as a treasure hunt to track down those Polaroid snapshots, shoeboxes of pictures and photos stacked away in draws and on closet shelves.

  2. Use your favorite social networking website, from MySpace, Twitter, FaceBook, Blogger and others to ask your relatives and friends to find those old school pictures, vacation shots, wedding and other special occasion photo memories.

  3. Share your stories. Write to local newspapers and blog about your experience as you revisit those special photo memories. Once your photos are digitized, tag each one with descriptive messages and narratives. Write a story about who was in the picture and note something special about the person, scene or event so future generations can keep those memories alive.

  4. Keep the momentum going. According to reports by ScanMyPhotos.com customers, the average household has about 5,000 photo snapshots. Once the pictures are pooled together, get it scanned. "For Christmas this year, my gift to my family started as a little weekend project back in October. It turned into a 3-month ordeal, with about an $800 price tag. But worth it. I gathered every old photo from both sides of my family, dating from roughly the 1890s to the 1990s, and had them all scanned. I also found hundreds of undeveloped slides and negatives, mostly from the 1940s-50s-60s and unseen for decades (some never seen!) and had them developed and scanned. And three unseen 8mm films of my family from around 1971. In total, the final discs hold 9,440 photos, spanning both sides of my family over the last century.

I learned so much about my family going through these. For example, my uncles on my mom's side hosted their own radio show in Hollywood in the 1940s, and featured guests like 40s bombshell Jayne Mansfield (that's the first picture above, my Uncle Otto on the left) - how could I have not known that?!? And my great-uncle on my dad's side was a candidate for President of Mexico, but was assassinated by the sitting president?!? (I have pictures of my uncle, but the newspaper above shows my grandmother at the funeral, far left.)

So, now, if the house ever burns down, we don't need to grab the photo albums because they are all preserved on multiple copies, and my family will have them to pass on forever!

(By the way - while I scanned about 1,500 photos myself, the bulk of them were done by www.scanmyphotos.com. They are in Irvine, [California] but also do it through the mail at the crazy low price of $49 per 1,000 photos!)"

New Kodak Gallery iPhone application features browsing, uploading, sharing capabilities

Eastman Kodak Co., Rochester, N.Y., recently released the first version of its Kodak Gallery iPhone application focusing on browsing, uploading, and sharing, reports the Kodak PluggedIn blog. Browsing allows users to view all Gallery albums, over either Wi-Fi or AT&T's Edge/3G networks, select an album, and browse photo thumbnails. With browsing, users select a thumbnail and see a larger image, then tap on that image and trigger an automated slide show.

Uploading gives users the ability to select any photo from the iPhone Photos app and deposit it into the Kodak Gallery album of their choice. Users can take advantage of the sharing functionality using the contacts stored in their iPhone by selecting the person to share with, then selecting the album to share. The contact will be sent an email from the Kodak Gallery pointing them to the album.

The settings app allows users to configure the account to access and change the tagline for the files to upload. It also enables the shake feature -- from a browse album view, shaking the iPhone will make a sound and pull up a random photo from that album, says the blog. Kodak is encouraging customer feedback on the new iPhone app. Users can respond directly at the recently updated iTunes App Store.

Preserving Photos: Learn how to protect your digital images, prints, and slides so they will survive over time.

Make Scans. Next, make digital scans of all or part of your collection. This will, in effect, halt further degradation of the images. "Digital pictures can remain as perfect a thousand years from now as they are today," says author and photographer Lester Lefkowitz, who teaches courses at the International Center of Photography in New York City.

Easiest, of course, is to have someone else do the scanning.
ScanCafe.com, for example, will scan your slides, negatives, and prints for prices starting at under a quarter each. You get back your original pictures along with a DVD holding the scans. Other companies with similar services are ScanMyPhotos.com, Britepix.com, and Hollywoodfotofix.com.


Or scan the images yourself. You can buy a dedicated film scanner that handles negatives and slides or a flatbed scanner that handles prints as well. Prices start at under $200.

"If you have the negative of a picture—and a good quality scanner—scan the negative, not the print," advises Lefkowitz. "The negative will give you a sharper result." If your scanner is of lower quality, scan the print.

More scanning tips from Lefkowitz and other imaging experts:

• For prints, set the resolution of the scan, expressed as dots per inch
(dpi), to 300, if you'll be making same-size prints of the original picture. For
enlargements, set the resolution to 600 dpi.

• For 35mm slides or negatives, scan at 2,000 dpi or higher.

• Before scanning, blow or brush dust off the film or print. "The less you
touch it directly, the better," Lefkowitz says.• Save the scan as a jpeg image
set to the highest quality setting (with least compression). Don't correct the
color, sharpness, or other attributes of the picture while scanning. Make a copy
of the scan to edit, then archive the original scan.

• Even if the photo is black and white, set the scanner to color. This will
result in a scan that you can decide to tint later if you wish.
